Wrestling Moves

A host of potentially useful moves and their variations are prevalent in wrestling. It would be nothing short of a book if all of these are to be mentioned. So here are the 3 basic wrestling techniques, and a few moves within them.

From The Top
Moves from the top are executed when a wrestler is in the top position. More often than not, these are either used to pin the opponent or get some quick near-fall points. A couple of widely known moves from the top are the wrist-and-half-Nelson and cradle. In the cradle, the wrestler who is on top hooks an elbow behind the knee of the opponent, and keeps one behind his head. Then he locks the hands for almost folding the opponent in half. The move is finished by sliding one knee into the back at a high level for bracing the opponent in the air and rocking him back on his shoulders. On the other hand, the wrist-and-half-Nelson is used for getting the opponent on the mat, which makes it easier for the other wrestler to attack him. Moreover, the opponent has no scope for defending himself by standing up, do a switch or a roll. Of course, these things will have to be done within the periphery of the rules.

It is Bottom’s Up
The moves within this technique are used by a wrestler when he is at the bottom, that is on the ground or mat. The most simplest and basic moves in this category are escape or stand up and switch. The wrestlers use escape to get to a standing position. The only thing is that a part from getting the technique, is that the wrestler has to be swift enough and agile. Otherwise, the opponent who is in the top position may grab his ankle and bring him down again. Switch is a better idea than escape, as executing a switch not just helps a wrestler to get to a standing and defensive position, but it helps him bring the opponent down too.

The Offense and the Defense
These are moves which are executed in the standing position, and mainly include take-downs and throws, and a lot of grappling. There is the single-leg take down, double leg take down, and the ankle pick. Ankle pick is where the wrestler literally snatches and grabs the opponent’s opposite ankle, lifting it to his waist. From there, the opponent can be easily manipulated and brought down to the mat. As far as throws in an upright position are concerned, the most common ones are fireman’s carry, duck under, and headlock hip toss. The duck under is a surprise package, and can absolutely stun the opponent. It is a must-have in a wrestler’s arsenal.

Cricket has a history

The origin of cricket is a contentious issue. Historians and researchers have slightly different theories about the origin of the game. But some conclusions were drawn based on historical evidence, that traces the sport’s origin to England. The word ‘cricket’ may have its origin in the word ‘cric’. Crics were wooden staves carried by shepherds. The game developed in the grasslands of Kent and Sussex, where it was a sport played mostly by kids, and not taken up seriously by adults. The first written record of the game can be traced to 1598, when a mention of the game ‘crekett’ or ‘crickett’ was found. Slowly, it became popular among adults, only to be suppressed by the clergy. In 1611, two men were prosecuted for playing cricket instead of going to church.
The Beginning
The new puritan government of England clamped down on the spread of cricket. It had become a major pastime in the 1600s among the labor class and peasants. The 1680s saw the end of the puritan regime, and monarchy was in power again. The new rulers themselves were fond of the game, and hence, it gained popularity and respect. In spite of betting and petty violence associated with cricket’s early years, the London magistrate viewed the game as ‘respectable’. In the year 1788, the ‘Laws of Cricket’ were laid down by the Marylebone Cricket Club, England. These laws are still adhered to, except for a few revisions and modifications. Till today, it is the only game in the world that has ‘laws’ instead of rules.
Cricket gained more popularity with the association of the rich and the famous of England with the game. Charles Lennox, the 2nd Duke of Richmond, the 7th baronet Sir William Gage, and Alan Broderick, were all high-profile connoisseurs of the game. Their interest ensured newspaper coverage for the game. The 1800s saw the emergence of Australia and South Africa as additions to the cricket playing nations. The first official international test match was played between the touring English side against Australia. This match was played in Melbourne, Australia, where the home side won by a margin of 45 runs.

The Aussies again defeated the English in 1882, resulting in a public outcry against the poor English game. One writer published an obituary for English cricket, stating that its ‘body’ would be cremated, and its ashes spread all over Australia. The next series played between the two countries was termed as the fight to ‘regain the ashes’. Till date, a test series between England and Australia is referred to as the ‘Ashes’ test series, and holds a special place in the cricketing world for the intensity and rivalry between the two cricket teams. Cricket made its only appearance in Olympics in the year 1900, with a game played between England and France. England won the gold medal. Today, there is a renewed effort to include it as an Olympic sport.

Female Weightlifters

It is said that a healthy man can sustain only 45 Del (unit) of pain. But at the time of childbirth, a woman experiences almost 57 Del of pain, which is equivalent to the pain one will experience if he/she breaks about 20 bones at a time! Women are a lot stronger than most men imagine them to be, then what’s wrong if women use their strength to lift weights? Why do people question or pass silly comments? Even those people who say such silly things don’t have answers to these questions, and yet they utter them.
Well built body
The reaction of female weightlifters to this statement would always be, “aarrrggghh”. They have a ‘well-built’ body and not ‘well-toned’ body. If it was possible, they would happily have the word ‘toned’ removed from the vocabulary.

Becoming bulky
Female weightlifters work out to stay healthy, not beef up. People believe the myth that building muscles makes one bulky. The reality is that people who work out follow a proper diet and hence don’t bulk up. The other myth is if one stops working out, his build up muscles turn into fat, which is absolutely not true.

There is only one retort that such a comment deserves, “please get your vision checked,” Having a muscular body doesn’t change a woman to a man, instead it makes her fit, and fit is definitely not a synonym for ‘male’.

Baseball Drills

For any child wishing to play college or professional baseball, these baseball drills can come in handy. You should know all the three positions and should master at least one.The base is a person who gives the base to the stunt. To be a base, you need to develop strong legs as the base has to bear the weight of the flyer. The flyer is a person who performs the jumps and completes the stunt. To become a flyer, you have to work really hard and should always be careful. Now the last person in the stunt is the spotter. Spotter is usually the tallest person in the group. Their work is to catch the flyer in case of any falls. Spotter is the most important person as he/she makes the flyer secure and confident while performing the stunts.

Badminton Court

Badminton is a game that demands strength, agility, and precision. It is one of my personal favorites. To build a court for this game, one needs knowledge of the standard dimensions. The right dimensions ensure the right playing space. This article is aimed at discussing these court measurements, decided upon by the international body that regulates affairs, related to badminton.

The game has its origins in colonial India and has a special connection with the city of Pune, in India, where it was first played. A badminton court is designed for singles and doubles plays. It is sectioned in a fashion, that’s similar to a lawn tennis court, but the measurements are different, along with the rules.

It is necessary that the dimensions of a badminton court are standardized, as it is a game played at the international level. That’s why, if you are building a new court, it’s necessary that you have the right court size. It ensures that the court can be used for tournaments and gives it wider recognition. Precision matters when it comes to badminton and the same goes for the court dimensions. The rules are set by the Badminton World Federation.

To start with, let us understand the basic structure of a badminton court. Its shape is rectangular, and bisecting the court exactly at the center, is a hoisted net, set on parallel poles. This net divides the court into a playing space for opposite players.

The court is marked with lines that limit the playing space. There are separate bordering lines for singles and doubles play. There is a central line that runs in both halves of the court, subdividing it, into four parts.

The width of the court must be 20 feet or roughly 6.1 meters, according to international rules. The length is limited to 44 feet or roughly 13.4 meters. Each one of the white or yellow lines, that mark the court boundaries, should be precisely 40 mm in width. Therefore, the total play area of the court is 880 square feet Or 81.74 square meters.
In singles competitions, the court dimensions are a bit altered. The width of the court for singles is lesser and is limited to 17 feet or 5.18 meters, by an inner boundary line, while the length remains the same. Thus, in singles, the players can exploit the full length of the court, but not the entire width. In short, the court for singles is narrow, but long.

The world of sports has drastically changed from being the entertaining realm, to an ambit of pugnacity. In a competitive game, all physical and mental limits are stretched, providing the inevitable gap for anxiety to fill in. The pressure to retain the top spot and dominate the sport can get to you.

The coordinated movement that is required for athletic events becomes tough if your body is in a tense state. Certain amount of worry is okay and can help your performance, but too much of it can induce negative thoughts, affecting your self-confidence. If your performance during practice sessions and competitions displays a significant difference, anxiety may be affecting your performance. What is Performance Anxiety?

It is common in stage artists and sportspersons, who are required to present themselves and their skills to a large crowd. It is believed that the pressure of attaining excellence as marked by the audience is one of the greatest triggers that causes a sportsperson to choke.

Types of Sports Anxiety
According to ‘Athletic Insight’, a journal of sports psychology, anxiety can be classified in two ways: trait anxiety and state anxiety. State anxiety is situational stress induced by situations in the game. A sportsperson’s autonomic nervous system is aroused in this state, which is the natural reaction of any individual. On the other hand, trait anxiety can be thought of as a world view that an individual uses when coping with stress.
In sports, individuals who are state anxious and low on the trait anxiety in tough situations, often deliver good performances consistently. On the other hand, athletes who have higher levels of trait anxiety, added with state anxiety, tend to perform below expectations.
What Causes Performance Anxiety?
Various psychologists have tried to figure out why is it during high tension situations that our brain fails to cope up and leads to a detrimental effect on our performance. Researches have shown that expert athletes behave like amateurs under pressure.
Unfamiliar Environment
During training and preparing for any competition, an athlete focuses on improving skills in a familiar environment. All the efforts taken and practice done are, thus, stored in the procedural memory. However, in a real competitive setup, the conscious awareness of unfamiliar grounds and the presence of a crowd corrupts the memory of the practiced game. It is also found that with more involved and encouraging crowds, the pressure to achieve the best is accentuated.

Passing Positions

In order to perform such volleyball drills, three passers need to line up in either serving or receiving volleyball positions. Players should keep their hands behind their backs. Then, the coach or the trainer will toss the volleyball towards them, from the other side of the net. Once the ball is tossed, the players should try to let the ball bounce through their legs. This drill will definitely improve their movement and speed of passing. This is the reason it is one of the most important volleyball passing drills that teaches them to move their feet, even before their hands.

Pass Set and Hit

Similar to what is mentioned above, three passers from the middle back, right back, or left back should line up. Similar number of hitters should line up in the left front, right front, or middle front. Then, you also need to place a shagger at the other side of the net and a setter on the target. Once everyone takes positions, the trainer will first pass the ball to the passers and then the passer will pass it to the target. Setters will set the hitters and shaggers will shage and place the ball in the cart. Apart from interchanging the positions of hitters and passers, you can also involve defenders into the play. This is one of the excellent volleyball drills for high school as well as middle school.

Off to a Slow Start
The next games, in 1900, saw female athletes included in tennis and golf, although the winners never knew they were Olympic champions. The games were held in Paris that year alongside the World’s Fair, and many events were shared between the two venues. It was only recently discovered that the golf tournament was, in fact, on the Olympics program, making winner Margaret Abbot the first female Olympic champion.
In 1912, the first female swimmers were admitted to the games. America did not send any competitors however, because American women were not allowed to compete in events that did not allow them to wear a long skirt. Fanny Durack of Australia became the world’s first Olympic gold medal swimmer.
Early Heroes
In 1928, women were allowed to compete in track and field events, and 16-year old Elizabeth Robinson, the only American competitor, grabbed the gold with a 12.1 second 100 meter dash. A few years later, she became the first female letter-man at Northwestern University. That same year, champion javelin thrower Lillian Copeland was unable to compete in the javelin throw because it was closed to women. So she threw a discus instead and won the gold.

Alice Coachman became a national hero after the 1946 Olympics, where she was the first African-American woman on the Track and Field team. She won the team’s only gold medal that year, and was the first African-American woman to win a gold medal at all. She was awarded a full college scholarship for her efforts.
Gymnastics wasn’t open to women until 1952, but America didn’t reach the gold until 1984 and the debut of Mary Lou Retton. Just 16 at the time, she won her country’s first gymnastics gold, and went on to take an additional four medals that year – more than any other athlete in any sport at the 1984 games.
Chauvinism and Skepticism
As recently as the 1960s, female Olympic-caliber athletes were met with skepticism – officials still didn’t believe that women could perform as well as men athletically. Not a group to take these things lying down, the Olympic Committee required women to ‘prove their sex’ by submitting to naked physical reviews and even gynecologic exams.

How to Build a Balance Beam at Home

Still can’t figure it out? All right, here’s the answer for you. All three ladies happen to be legendary gymnasts, and each one of them has won a bagful of medals at international sporting events. Nadia Comaneci, in particular, took the world by storm at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, when she won three golds and achieved a gymnast’s perfect score of 10.0 a whopping 7 times, all at the tender age of 14. Since then, she has been the perfect role model for young gymnasts all over the world. Some young girls who were inspired by her feats ditched their skipping ropes for the double bars, while others opted for the balance beam over their seesaws.

Speaking of which, how many of you are aware that you could build one with your own hands in a very short span of time? Yes, now that I have your attention, let me demonstrate this simple process in the following section.

Making a Balance Beam

Professional balance beams are manufactured using a variety of synthetic material in addition to wood. However, since we are building one for home use or, at best, for practice, we will concentrate on making a beam with a pure wooden base.
Generally, a professional beam is approximately 16 feet long, 4 inches wide, and 5 inches thick. Since ours is mainly going to be for practice purposes, you can compromise with the length a bit, but do make sure that the width and thickness remain the same.
In most cases, maple is the preferred choice of wood. You can opt for other wood types if you wish to, but make sure that the wood is sufficiently hard and sturdy.
Some people believe that it is better to build a balance beam out of one single lumber, rather than gluing together multiple smaller pieces. Gluing together multiple pieces can weaken it considerably. Alternatively, you can make sure you use really strong adhesive and glue together strips of plywood to get the desired thickness. Whatever you do, make sure it is strong and sturdy enough. You wouldn’t want your little girl to fall down in case the glued pieces happen to come apart, would you?
Run sandpaper over all the sides of the lumber to smoothen all the surfaces, while paying special attention to the intended top surface.
Once you are done with the sandpapering, you need to cover the top surface of the beam. For this purpose, you can use specially designed suede fabric that has a layer of self-adhesive at the back. You can glue it to the wood surface and also staple it at the corners to ensure a tight fit.
